My 1989 CV has no mufflers at the moment, should I go for glasspacks or flowmasters?

Neither.
A house brand Summit muffler should be decent.
Their turbo mufflers are Thrush and their fully weldeds are Flowtechs. The fully weldeds will outflow both the glasspacks and flowmasters (which will DROOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEEE).

My vote is for Flowmasters. A little more classy and refined than plain old glass packs.
Also, those body panels are so clean.

FUCK mufflers, straight pipe for the win.
Actually no, that's a bad idea. I just wanted to say that.

Personally, I like the sound of glasspacks but that's because I'm old and that was the sound of my youth.

This thing sat for 15 years before I bought it for $500. Hopefully a paint-job and a built 302/5spd combo is in its future.

I'll have to look into that. I was just limiting myself to what I could go pick up today.

Does it have much rust? It doesn't look like there's any.

Don't worry, I'll roll muffleless for a few days. I live in a fairly rural area, and the cats keep it under control...for now.

It's got cop suspension, cop exhaust, and even 15 y/o cop tires on the rear at the moment.

Hardly any. I'll for sure be uploading pictures when I actually get stuff done.

I have a soft spot for glasspacks, I'm really leaning toward them at the moment. My neighbor used to have a '75 F150 Supercab with the 390 FE motor and dual exhaust with glasspacks. My little brother bought it and is in the process of rebuilding it. When we started it up to bring it over to our place, I had just about every neighbor approach me to tell me it smelled or sounded like their childhood.

Thats pretty quiet. Sounds like it still has a cat which will keep it quiet enough. Leave it how it is

Yeah, it still has cats. I just unbolted the duals right after the cats. Later today I am going to cut the mufflers off the pipes and see how it sounds with just more pipe on it.

Leave straight pipe with just cats. Cats actually quiet the exhaust down a lot. My cherokee is straight pipe with only a cat and it sounds amazing. Also have a miata with no cat and only a muffler. Also sounds good.

I should weld some upside-down headers and have stacks through the hood. With little rain caps and everything.

Yes. That's an excellent idea. Don't forget to give it a goofy paint job.

Glasspacks are raspy as hell and will annoy you.Flowmasters are chambered mufflers which will sound good but hinder performance.I'd go for some magnaflows and resonators if its got too much bark.

It's hard for me to dislike the sound of any engine. I had a '93 corolla with a worn out automatic transmission that did 0-60 in 23 seconds, but I gutted it, straight-piped it and somehow that made it a blast to drive (to the junkyard).

I am already in the process of lifting the rear a few inches and it will have military green spray paint job with stars until I can afford sparkly expensive brown.

Flowmasters I had them on my 95 Cobra for about 10 years. I miss that exhaust setup. Bassani X and 2 chamber flows. It was loud and sounded glorious.

Every fox platform car I've ever seen that has Flowmasters that were on the car for more than a year had 2 rusty hunks where the mufflers should be. They make stainless steel ones now. Whichever way you go, don't cheap out.
Truth be told there are quite a few other options I'd go with before either of those.
Ever heard Borla XR-1's on a Windsor motor? Glorious!

Derby car look ftw. (And I'm not meaning to be offensive, if I sound like it. It's your car.)

Man, that Borla sounds awesome, but hot fuck those would cost more than the car. I was just going to buy some $30 mufflers from my buddy or splurge for $40 stainless glasspacks until I build the motor. Then probably something similar to the XR-1's.

Nothing can offend a $500 RWD car with bench seats, fat sway bars, and a V8.
